Why Some Ecosystems Depend on Periodic Fire
Fire can be an ecological process and a serious hazard at the same time. Frequency, intensity and context determine the effects.

Adaptation is place-specific
In some ecosystems, recurring fire helps maintain open structure, cycles nutrients or creates conditions used by fire-adapted plants. Adaptation does not make every fire beneficial, nor does it remove risks to people, water, cultural resources or habitat.
A fire regime includes frequency, season, size, pattern and severity. Changing one part can produce outcomes unlike those of historical fire.
